In order to identify L. japonicus and M. loti genes involved in the early stage of legume-rhizobium symbiosis, we constructed respective cDNA libraries from infected whorl roots of wild-type L. japonicus plants (MG-20) and vagrant infection thread 1 (vag1) mutants (Suzaki et al.
