<STUDY_ABSTRACT>Escherichia coli strain E22. This is an enteropathogenic (EPEC) strain of Escherichia coli and has been used in the development of a model system of infection in rabbits. It was provided by Drs. James B. Kaper and Edward Boedeker from the School of Medicine, University of Maryland. This strain produces a number of virulence factors including serotype O103:H2 and the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) type III secretion system pathogenicity island that is responsible for producing secreted effector proteins that cause the typical attachment/effacing (A/E) lesions of the epithelial layer. Genomic sequencing included a small insert library (4-5 kb) and a large insert library (10-12 kb) from which 22,181 and 48,178 reads were sequenced, respectively. This amount of sequence represents 11X coverage of the genome. The preliminary project assembly is composed of 109 contigs.</STUDY_ABSTRACT>
