title |
The whole genome sequence of a dinoflagellate, Symbiodinium minutum |
description |
Dinoflagellates are morphologically diverse, unicellular eukaryotes, belonging to the superphylum Alveolata, which also includes ciliates and apicomplexans. Since the ciliate and apicomplexan genomes are both highly divergent, dinoflagellate genome information is essential to understand not only dinoflagellate biology, but also the evolution of alveolate genomes generally. Here we investigate first draft of a dinoflagellate nuclear genome to clarify alveolate genomic organization and evolution. The ~1,500 megabase (Mb) nuclear genome of Symbiodinium minutum has a 616-Mb euchromatic region, comprising ~42,000 protein-coding genes |
