title Bovine teat microbiome analysis revealed dysbiosis in quarters with high mastitis prevalence
description Mastitis is an inflammatory disease of the mammary gland, which causes huge economic losses in the milk production chain. Like several infections, it used to be considered for years as a host pathogen interaction driven by host and bacterial determinants. The involvement of the bovine mammary gland microbiota in the host pathogen interaction been poorly investigated so far, and mainly at the infectious episode. In this study, the bovine teatmicrobiota was investigated in 31 quarters which were all free of mastitis at sampling time but which had different history regarding mastitis: from no history of mastitis on all the previous lactations (Healthy quarter, Hq) to one or several clinical mastitis (Mastitic quarter, Mq). Total bacterial DNA was extracted from foremilk samples and swab samples of the teat canal. The 16S DNA was PCR-amplified (Variable Regions 3 and 4) and pyrosequenced (GS Flex+, 454 Roche). Taxonomic profiles were generated using QIIME.
