Salmonella Paratyphi A is the causative agent of paratyphoid fever, a disease virtually indistinguishable from typhoid fever. Over the past decade the incidence of paratyphoid fever caused by Salmonella Paratyphi A has increased dramatically, and in some areas has surpassed typhoid fever incidence.Salmonella Paratyphi A is genetically monomorphic, with the first two finished genome sequences differing by fewer than 200 single nucleotide polymorphisms and very few insertions or deletions. Very few molecular typing tools are able to differentiate among Salmonella Paratyphi A isolates at all, with phage typing, ribotyping and PFGE showing limited discriminatory power. In order to identify sequence polymorphisms within the global Salmonella Paratyphi A population, a total of 155 novel isolates of Paratyphi A were assembled for whole genome sequencing using multiplex Illumina/Solexa sequencing.http://www.sanger.ac.uk/resources/downloads/bacteria/salmonella.html |
