description | Interspecific gene comparisons are hampered by the low resolution of methods based on sequence analysis. This is especially topical for plants whose genomes are affected by multiple cycles of polyploidization followed by the loss or subfunctionalization of part of paralogs. Here we describe a novel approach to interspecific gene comparison based on the combination of sequence data with high resolution data on gene expression patterns. In order to overcome the problem of matching of expression patterns in species with differing morphology we used machine learning. We show the efficiency of this approach on the comparison of detailed transcriptome maps of Arabidopsis thaliana and Fagopyrum esculentum - species that represent two large clades within flowering plants. | ||
