This sequence data was generated as part of a project that exploredthe utility of whole-chloroplast sequences to distinguishintra-specific variation in cultivated cacao (Theobroma cacao). Ourdata demonstrates that the whole chloroplast sequence of cultivatedcacao lineages harbor sufficient information to reliably distinguishvarieties and even individual genotypes. We conclude that thisapproach, which could be understood as a extension of the traditional'DNA-barcoding' concept through next-generation sequencing, showsgreat promise for applications where very closely related orinterbreeding taxa must be distinguished. |
