description Cucumber seeds were germinated as described for sample A1. After the initial 18 h germination phase, seedlings were exposed to H2O-saturated conditions and grown for a further 4 h while under rotation using a 3D clinostat. Under these conditions, roots bent randomly. Cucumber seedlings with roots that bent to the water-absorbent plastic side were selectively harvested. Seedlings were then placed in RNAlater and stored at 4 degree Celsius overnight. A small section of root tip (0.5 mm) was removed, and a 1.5 mm section of the remaining root was divided longitudinally into the water-absorbent plastic (wet) side (this sample) and the opposite (dry) side (sample A10).
